Getting Creative During Covid-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all aspects of ministry. Many churches have been shut down across the country, and also even more going virtual doing Facebook Live church services and having board meetings with Zoom calls. So far, all of our evangelism events this year have been cancelled, including St. Patrick's Day parade, Des Moines Farmers Market, and the Iowa State Fair. It was a huge loss for us Evangelists, and I think most of them would agree, that we all feel a little lost because of it.

One of such evangelistic outreaches that took a hit this year was the Gideon's International, which I am a part. Each fall we look forward to reaching the major college campuses across our state distributing Gideon New Testaments to thousands of students. Many of these students have never owned a copy of God's Word, and even more come from all over the country, and even the world, to study in Iowa. But this year all but one college distribution were cancelled.

That one distribution was hampered by many social distancing restrictions, including placing testaments on tables for students to take one instead of handing them out, talking through a mask, and staying over six feet from where students take the book. So how were the results? Last year at this particular campus, 2147 New Testaments were handed out, and in 2018 we distributed 2115. This year, unfortunately, we passed out an all time low of 259.

We wonder if making arrangements with campus staff, adhering to the COVID rules, and the time and effort it took to lug those boxes across campus, for only 10% of previous years, was worth it all. I believe it was. It could be that 259 students are now seeking a life Christ, understanding the gospel, and surrendering to His will. More than likely this distribution was even more fruitful because those who took a testament had to possibly conquer their own fears and pick it up themselves, not just take it out of guilt, as some do. But even if one person comes to a saving faith in Jesus, what a celebration! Our job is to be obedient and faithful to the call and the distribution of God's Word.

In the past several months, we Gideon's have had to get creative in sharing God's Word with those around us, without the ability to do mass distributions. This past month, members of my camp met to fill care packages to First Responders in Central Iowa. So, if you think about it, if it wasn't for the pandemic, this new group may have otherwise never been able to hear the gospel. Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." All things work together for good. Even pandemics.

This year I decided to try something new and was accepted to become a Staff Writer for Got Questions Ministries, answering personal questions about God's Word, Christianity, cults, etc. This has been a huge blessing to the point where I am considering removing my other blog site, Honest Answers.  I have also been sharing Christ on a one-to-one basis having bible studies with unbelievers over the phone. One in particular made it through the Gospel of John without dying [I have studied the Gospel of John with several people, all of whom have died before finishing it].

As Christians, we must be willing to change with the times and paradigm shifts to share God's Word. We must be open to try new ways to reach people with the gospel, without compromising Scripture. For God's Word says to be ready in season and out of season (2 Timothy 4:2). If you have any suggestions on how to share Christ during this pandemic, or if you have tried anything in this off-season, please comment below. We would love to hear from you.

Gideon's Des Moines Bible Blitz

This past week marked the Des Moines Gideon's International Bible Blitz where Professional Christian men and their spouses lovingly, graciously, and bravely distributed God's Word throughout the Des Moines, IA area. I was so blessed to be a part of this awesome en devour.

Throughout the different camps that attended we were met with alot of opposition, prayed, and the Lord helped us through. The opposition I am referring to was weather, and sickness. We were to experience a ton of snow in the Des Moines area at the start of the distribution. But looking at the weather report, even though it was cold, the snow went AROUND Des Moines, and not over top of us. Praise God for His mercy on us. Even though it did hinder those coming in from Minnesota area, we still were able to get the job done. Crunch time came at the end of our distribution and it was a beautiful 70 degree weather. Many of us, myself included, were faced with sickness throughout the time we spent together. Most of us pressed on and were able to get the job done.

The entire event was extremely successful. We set a goal of 30,000 scriptures to be distributed and I was told we overshot that goal by a few thousand! How awesome is God. Why is this number so important?  Gideon International spokesman Woody Murray said:
"[Gideon Bibles] are spiritual staples of nearly every hotel room and the only item guests are invited to take. Our statistics show one-quarter of all travelers will read the bible in the hotel rooms and each bible has the potential to reach 2,300 people over its six-year life expectancy."
That number is quite amazing. The average amount of rooms for a limited amenity hotel in the USA is 114 rooms. That means in a 6 year period, just one hotel can have the potential to reach 262,200 people. According to an article from business travel news, in 2015 the hotel industry in the U.S. broke the 5 million room mark at 5,001,163 rooms. That is alot of people who have the potential to experience God's Holy Scriptures just in the U.S. alone and why this project is so important to reaching the lost and fulfilling the great commission.

But make no mistake...a bible can easily outlive its 6 year life expectancy. Once a bible gets decommissioned from a hotel room after its 6 years, if it is in good condition, it will be sent out to prisons, shelters, and other places it is needed. This is why programs like the Gideon Card Program is a great way to honor a loved one who has passed on, and a joy, investment, and a legacy in a living soul can be formed.

Though I am not allowed to include the specifics of this blitz, I will say that the men and women of Gideon's International are some of the most bravest, loving, caring, and especially focused people I know, fulfilling the great commission of Jesus to go into all the world and preach the gospel. In each and every one of our minds, as Gideon's, we know we have a job to do, and to distribute God's word to every person we are able to. It is, and always will be, and incredible sight, to see Gideon's come from all over and to walk hand-in-hand together as brothers, to distribute God's word. We may not do it fearlessly, but we overcome that fear because of love of the other person receiving it, and love for our God and creator.

Please consider becoming a member, a "Friend of the Gideon's", or even giving through the Gideon Card Program so that more scriptures can be given out freely to those who need them.

The Official Counts of the Gideon Fall Distributions

As a member of Gideons International, I had just received my Gideon Newsletter, "The Torch of the Iowa Gideons".  Inside were the official counts of the Farm Progress Show and College Bible distributions.  Here are the numbers:

Farm Progress Show
- 1,076 Bibles
- 22 members attended

University of Northern Iowa
- 3,159 Bibles
- 28 members attended

University of Iowa
- 5,057 Bibles
- 46 members attended

Iowa State University
- 6,750 Bibles (NEW RECORD!)
- 41 members attended

Drake University
- 648 Bibles (Numbers down because of rain)
- 13 members attended

Simpson College
- 501 Bibles

This brings us to a total of 17,191 BIBLES GIVEN OUT THIS FALL!!!

Praise God.  Please pray and consider giving to the Gideons.  It is only by God's grace we can make this possible.  It was such a blessing to be able to go to college campuses and distribute God's word.  Pray that many of these bibles will be read by students and staff and that they will give their lives to serve the Lord.

My First Gideon Bible Distribution - UNI

About two years after I became a Christian back in 2003 we had two members of Gideons International come visit our church.  After listening to the testamonies of these men, and what the organization stood for, I knew that I watned to be a member of this proffesional men's association.  After applying several times, and then being denied several times, I gave up hope that my dream would happen, and accepted the fact that I would never be a member.  Years later a friend of mine joined the organization and begged me to go to a few meetings.  Carefully I went not to get my hopes up.  Not getting our hopes up I did fill out another application.  Long story short, I was chosen, became a member, and received my emblem in July, 2014.  The fire was lit again, and was grateful to be a part of this proffesional men's organization boldly going into the world to proclaim the gospel and distributing God's word throughout the world.
Wednesday was my first Gideon Bible distribution and what better way to start would be at the University of Northern Iowa.  I was supprised to know that I was the only one to represent Des Moines East Camp, and I was welcomed by impressed men that I would drive two hours to lend a hand.  We all met at the Hy-Vee to have breakfast, fellowship, and get our assignments.  Since help was short, each of us had to take our own postions alone.
Not realizing where I would be I was placed at one of the main gates on the corner of College and University.  I had a lot of traffic, but I was only able to give out 47 Gideon New Testaments out of 200 available.  The students were genuinely nice, some very grateful, some cautious, and some stand-offish.  I was able to have a conversation with a Muslim girl.  She was very grateful to receive the testament, and I was able to carry on a conversation before she had to go to class.  Before she left I gave her a tract from Living Waters called, "Are You Good Enough To Go To Heaven?" and she said she was going to read them both.  In the end, we gave out 3,159 Testaments total with 28 Gideons and 2 Auxillary members.  One man gave out 500 by himself, and on average we gave 100 per man.  Next week we hit University of Iowa, then the following week is Iowa State University.  Please be in prayer that we have enough laborers to harvest these fields and that many come to the Lord by the Testaments given.
